Paul and Mark Winter
'Spek en Boontjies: Mapping Childhoods in Cape Town,' we talked to brothers Mark and Paul Winter about their latest book titled 'Slangkop: A Childs Eye View of Apartheid' and their experiences growing up in Simon's Town."In 1959, the Winter family emigrated to South Africa. Mark was two years old, and Paul was five: 'I was born in England, but I have no recollection of Eastbourne, the town where I was born, nor an image of England disappearing from view as we left port. Africa shaped our childhoods.” (Mark)
"We grew up side by side - we served together at church services on Sundays, raced go-karts down the steep roads of the neighbourhood, trekked up the mountain, learned to spin wooden tops, played marbles and munched on chips and Stars. We touched each others’ lives. Then came Group Areas and the forced removals. The town was never the same."
